Powering Agricultural Excellence with Solar Energy

Nestled in Grant, Michigan, Riveridge Cider Co. is one of the state's largest apple cider manufacturers, operating a fully integrated farm-to-bottle business model that manages every step of production from growing apples to processing, bottling, packaging, and distribution. As the company expanded to meet growing demand, Riveridge constructed a new production facility featuring a south-facing metal standing seam roof, creating an ideal opportunity for a rooftop solar installation.

To support continued growth while gaining greater control over energy costs, Riveridge partnered with Harvest Solar to install a 414 kW rooftop solar array. The system was designed around the facility's operations and is expected to provide more than $2 million in electricity savings over 30 years, with an estimated five-year return on investment.

Meeting the Energy Demands of Cider Production

Like many food and beverage manufacturers, Riveridge relies on consistent electricity to support its daily operations. Refrigeration systems, processing equipment, bottling lines, packaging systems, and storage facilities all require reliable power to maintain product quality and keep production running efficiently.

Because much of Riveridge's electricity usage occurs during daytime production hours, the facility was a strong match for solar. By generating electricity on-site when energy demand is highest, the system helps offset utility costs while providing a more predictable energy strategy for the future.

A Solar Installation Designed Around the Facility

Riveridge's new production facility provided the ideal foundation for solar with its south-facing metal standing seam roof. This roofing design allows solar mounting systems to attach directly to the roof seams without creating penetrations, helping protect the building's structure and maintain roof integrity.

Working with Harvest Solar, Riveridge installed a 414 kW rooftop solar array expected to produce approximately 497,412 kWh annually. The system was sized to align with the company's energy consumption patterns, allowing Riveridge to maximize the amount of solar power used directly within its operations.

"Working with Harvest Solar, from the beginning, the process was pretty smooth. I think they were really good at communicating what was going on with us. Anything we can help keep more of a consistent cost, being the electric, definitely helps," said VP of Agribusiness Justin Finkler.

Cost Savings and Energy Independence for Agribusinesses

The financial impact of Riveridge's solar investment extends beyond immediate utility savings. The system is expected to reduce electricity expenses by approximately $45,078 annually, providing more than $2 million in projected savings throughout its 30-year lifespan.

For Riveridge, solar provides more than cost savings. By generating its own electricity, the company gains greater control over one of its largest operating expenses and can better plan for future growth without relying solely on fluctuating utility rates.
