Hoeve Farms, a family-owned and operated hog and grain farm in Holland, Michigan, faces substantial year-round energy demands. The Solar Solution: Implementing Elevated Ground-Mounted Arrays

To address Hoeve Farms' high energy demands, solar expert Jake Schuster evaluated the farm's requirements and recommended the implementation of two elevated ground-mount solar systems. The systems, with capacities of 75.60kW and 41.04kW respectively, were designed to support the farm's hog and grain operations effectively.

These elevated solar arrays were installed strategically to maximize energy generation while also offering additional benefits. By harnessing solar power, Hoeve Farms could secure a reliable and sustainable energy source, reducing their dependency on traditional energy sources and contributing to a greener future.

Financial and Environmental Benefits

The installation of the solar arrays has resulted in substantial financial savings for Hoeve Farms. With an annual cost saving of $19,295, the farm has been able to significantly reduce its utility bills. Over a projected 30-year period, the total savings from both solar arrays are estimated to amount to an impressive $1,192,576.

In addition to the financial benefits, the environmental impact of the solar installations is noteworthy. The estimated CO2 offset from the solar arrays is equivalent to the emissions from burning 3,215,823 pounds of coal. By transitioning to solar power, Hoeve Farms is contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.

The elevated ground-mounted solar arrays at Hoeve Farms serve a dual purpose. Besides providing a reliable source of energy, the installations also act as shading structures for the farm's livestock. With the help of the 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit and the USDA REAP Grant, the return on investment for the solar projects has been reduced to 2.35 years and 2.75 years, making it a financially viable decision for the farm.

According to Jeff, the best part of the whole deal is the shade provided for the cattle during the summer and the significant reduction in the farm's electricity bills each month.
