Harvest Solar Helps Epple Family Farms Preserve Freshness with Renewable Energy

Epple Family Farms, a third-generation family farm in Watervliet, Michigan, has long been known for producing apples and peaches of the highest quality. Behind the scenes, however, maintaining that peak freshness requires energy-intensive cold storage systems, an essential part of bringing fruit from orchard to table.

Recognizing both the environmental and financial impact of these operations, the Epple family turned to solar energy for a sustainable solution. With their mission to provide fresh, flavorful produce while caring for the land and their community, the partnership with Harvest Solar was a natural fit.

A Solar Solution for Freshness and Sustainability

To meet the farm’s energy needs, Harvest Solar installed a 77.60 kW roof-mounted solar array on the Epple’s cold storage facility. The system was designed with a dual orientation: the east-facing array generates more power in the morning, while the west-facing array provides higher output in the afternoon. This ensures maximum performance during the hot summer months when cooling demands are highest.

Led by solar expert Jake Schuster and supported by strong collaboration with the Epple family, the project came together seamlessly. Now, renewable energy will support the farm’s operations for decades to come, backed by Harvest Solar’s dedicated service team.

Impressive Results and Lasting Impact

The solar array has a nameplate capacity of 77.60 kWdc and is estimated to generate approximately 87,434 kWh per year. This translates into immediate and long-term benefits for the farm:

  • Annual Savings: $10,545 on electricity costs

  • 30-Year Savings: $644,035 in projected utility savings

  • Environmental Impact: An annual CO₂ offset equal to the emissions from burning 1,880,589 pounds of coal

  • Return on Investment: Reduced to just 6.8 years with the Federal Investment Tax Credit

These results highlight the power of renewable energy to drive both economic and environmental benefits, helping family farms like Epple Family Farms remain sustainable and resilient for future generations.

The Epple Family's Perspective

“The solar project has impacted our orchards from a cost-saving standpoint. As long as the sun’s out, we’re generating power, which then lowers our electric bill. My overall experience with Harvest Solar was they were easy to work with, got the job done when they said they were gonna get it done, and I have nothing but compliments for them.”
