A Heritage Rooted in the Land

For six generations, Spring Grove Nursery in Mazon, Illinois, has stood as a testament to the enduring relationship between family, community, and the land. Founded on principles of stewardship and care, the nursery has grown from a modest farm into a respected institution, committed to nurturing both trees and community. Each tree they cultivate symbolizes a promise to future generations—a promise to uphold the values of resilience, thoughtful growth, and environmental responsibility.

Harnessing Solar Power for a Greener Future

In a bid to align its operations with its vision for a sustainable future, Spring Grove Nursery has taken a significant step by implementing a 33.95kW ground-mounted solar array. This initiative is not merely about reducing energy costs; it represents a deeper commitment to environmental stewardship. The solar array, which is estimated to generate approximately 47,272kWh per year, underscores the nursery's dedication to harnessing clean energy and reducing its carbon footprint.

The Partnership with Harvest Solar

To ensure the successful implementation of their solar project, Spring Grove Nursery partnered with Harvest Solar. This collaboration brought together Spring Grove's commitment to sustainability and Harvest Solar's technical expertise. The custom-engineered system was designed following a thorough evaluation of the site and its energy load, ensuring optimal performance and alignment with the nursery's energy usage patterns. The array has been built with the potential for future expansion, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to energy management.

Economic and Environmental Benefits of Solar Energy

The economic benefits of the solar array are substantial, with an estimated annual cost savings of $3,736 and projected savings of $248,218 over 30 years. In addition to the financial incentives, the environmental impact is equally impressive—the solar array's estimated CO2 offset is equivalent to the emissions from burning 1,007,315 pounds of coal. These figures highlight the dual benefits of solar energy, providing both economic relief and a significant reduction in environmental impact.

Spring Grove Nursery has also leveraged the 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit and additional incentives from the Illinois Shines Program, reducing the return on investment period to just 3.4 years. This strategic financial planning further demonstrates the nursery’s commitment to sustainable and economically viable practices.

Commitment to Community and Sustainability

Driven by a deep sense of responsibility to both community and the environment, Spring Grove Nursery’s decision to install on-site solar panels is a direct reflection of its guiding principles. “Stewardship defines everything we do at Spring Grove Nursery—our mission is to cultivate healthy trees, foster strong roots, and nurture resilient communities. Our partnership with Harvest Solar to bring solar power to our farm is a true extension of that commitment, enabling us to generate clean energy and further our ongoing mission to innovate, evolve, and care for the land that sustains us,” said Jamie and Becky Thomas, owners of Spring Grove Nursery.

By harnessing clean energy, Spring Grove Nursery not only reduces its operational costs but also sets an example for other businesses in the community. Their commitment to sustainability is a powerful statement about the potential for tradition and innovation to coexist and thrive. This blend of heritage and forward-thinking ensures that Spring Grove Nursery will continue to be a beacon of environmental responsibility and community strength for generations to come.
